President Kennedy was assassinated in the afternoon, but in Nurnberg, it was already after dark when we heard the news. That was Thursday, and our official notification came Saturday morning. There were regular morning formations for the Medical Detachment enlisted men going on duty. But on that Saturday morning everybody was present – the Medical Detachment, the Dental Clinic, and other units housed on the grounds. We all wore our class A uniforms – on duty and off, enlisted and officer. Even the nurses were in uniform. We formed up in front of the hospital, marched out on the grass, and faced the hospital. Several messages from military and civilian authorities were read. At the time, I was surprised we did not get a message from President Johnson. The flag was raised and lowered to half staff to Taps, and it was over. As we were leaving the field, I turned and saw the traffic on Rothenburger Strasse had stopped. The people were out of their cars, lining the fence, and watching us in silence.

I just wandered upon this site and found it great that someone started this up. I was and x-ray tech at 98th Gen from 92-94, during which time the hospital converted to the 3rd CSH. The hospital was closing by the time I left. I went back to Nurnberg in 1998 and it was sad to see the hospital and kasernes empty. I had a wonderful tour in Nurnberg!

  7. Forrest Cordry says:

Does anyone have information on a unexploded bomb from WWII that was uncovered in the front of the hospital? I believe it was back in the 1970′s.

  8. Brandy Bosler says:

I was born in this hospital on May 18th, 1985. I was just talking with my mother about it today (my birthday). She was serving in Germany at that time.

  9. Barry L Hughes says:

I was born here May 27, 1957. I’d like to go back to visit… even if it is a parking lot or convenience store. Problem is… my original birth certificate is lost and I need to get a replacement in order to get a passport. Can anyone direct me to the proper authority? I’d greatly appreciate it.

    • Bill Boyd says:

Barry, you may be able to get a copy of your “Consular report of birth” from the US state department. Unless your parents went to the trouble to get a German civil birth certificate that is all the documentation there is. My first son was born in Nurnburg Army Hospital. I’m not at home so I don’t recall the full name of the form, but its something like Consular report of birth abroad.

  10. Tammy (Sweeten) Thorne says:

My ex-husband (Mike Sweeten) and I were stationed at the 98th General Hospital from late 1985 until early 1989. We both worked as Behavioral Science Specialists (he in the Drug & Alcohol Rehab Unit and me in the Social Work Services Unit). Our daughter was born during the last 3 months we were there. We initially lived in an apartment on the German economy (our love nest) before being assigned to army housing directly across the street from the hospital. We loved Germany and so enjoyed our time at the 98th General Hospital!

    • David Pacheco Jr. says:
