Apr 27, 10 at 3:52 pmI was stationed at Ferris Barracks from Nov 1963 to May 1966. Most of my tour was in HHC 2BDE. I mainly want to respond to Jack Cockroft’s post. I too was in the post theatre on the night of Nov 22, 1963. The movie was Alfred Hitchcock”s ‘The Birds.’ They called two or three units out on alert before they shut the movie down and told the rest of us what had happened and sent us back to our units. We spent the next few days at our alert area near an old WWII German pillbox, wondering when we would see the first Russian tanks approaching our position. Had it happened a few months later they would have had to look for me at George’s or at The Walfish.

Jun 11, 10 at 6:45 amI was with the 501st MP Co in Erlangen from Feb 78 to Nov 79. It’s hard to believe that more than 30 years has passed since I left there. Being stationed in Erlangen was definitely one of the highlights of my military career. So many good people and good times. I’m looking forward to getting together with a couple of guys I was stationed with in 3 weeks. I hope their memories are good because mine are fading, the result of too many nights partying.
As I read the comments posted on this site and others, it’s amazing at how many people were so deeply affected by the city of Erlangen. The affection spans soldiers on duty from the 50’s right up until Ferris Barracks was closed. I returned to Erlangen only briefly in 1990. Just passing through. I managed to stop in the old MP station and walked around the post awhile. It was still pretty much as I remembered it. I imagine now that except for a few buildings, everything has changed. I love looking at the old pictures of that great duty station.

Jul 22, 10 at 8:29 amI was stationed there as a newly promoted SSG from 73-76 and was the Redeye Section Sergeant for 2-81 Armor in CSC. I drove a new 1972 Chevelle SS 454 and I believe the rubber marks are still all over Erlangen and especially the alley behind our barracks and Blood Alley. My German landlord joked that my fuel line going to my 850 dual feed holley was bigger than the tail pipe on his car. I still go by and see him during my visits back to Germany.
I just had lunch with my old company commander yesterday who retired as a LTC, a great leader and a highly decorated Vietnam veteran. My best to everyone that served here over the years. A special thanks to Liz Denison who has been a special friend all these years. Be safe, Army Strong!
